Salty Sailor...A Big Boy Room in the Making

A little peek at a room in progress…if you care to follow along with this sort of thing ;)

This room all started with a tiny vintage lamp that I fell in love with and couldn’t help but start dreaming up an entire room around.

This is our last nursery and I’ve loved everything about it’s foxiness. I always mourn the taking down of nurseries for “big kid” rooms, but our little guy has figured out how to launch himself out of the crib and we are moving on to a big boy bed…so why not have a little fun with it?

Current Room…so foxy

New “Salty Sailor” Big Boy Room

First…I think I have to just start with this lamp and if you don’t love it as much as I do, well, go man overboard and ditch reading this post because you’re definitely not going to like the old sailor art then ;)

I should point out that the lamp is super tiny. Probably no more than 12” and perfectly made for a 2 year-old ;). Kidding. He’s going to break it in minutes. That’s why I take pictures to remember.

My goal is to source as many vintage items as possible, but mix in some modern things along the way to balance it out. So…without further ado, here is the mood board with a few things I’m still debating a bit and a few things I’ve sourced through weird trips to strangers’ houses.

This 1890’s federal-style dresser was just absolute perfection and I thank my lucky Facebook marketplace stars that it happened to come up a town over in perfect condition. The watercolor above the dresser is an original piece by Joanna Krasnansky with the exhibition entry form still attached on the back. It seems original and I’m not sure if I could have gotten that lucky to snag this but hopefully I’ll track down the artist one day and find out. If you’re interested in her work, the most I could find was a few prints and originals for sale in various auction houses and the above link, but hoping to find out more!I love that the article says “a day she doesn’t paint is a day wasted”.

And as for that salty sailor, I found an original painting from a Cape May, NJ gallery that a sweet family was selling with a beautiful story to go with it. There is some talk in my house if the painting is amazing or creepy, but I’m committed to the look. I’d like to think this sailor is happy to find a new home with the wildest of roommates, our Penn.

More to come if I can ever decide on a wallpaper (or none! eek).
